YakTrax Walk Traction Cleats Review

First off, if you haven’t had time to check out the video associated with this blog post, you may want to before reading forward.

It’ll show the YakTrax in action and we do a short video review of these as well. Another disclaimer, we are not getting paid by YakTrax to create this review, just figured you all might enjoy this gear as we now do!

YakTrax 1OVERVIEW

As you can see from the picture above, there really isn’t a whole lot to these cleats, which makes them great! The less complex the less room for error. The rubber frame around these cleats are very weather resist according to their maker, YakTrax. Meaning it should last quite a while for all your winter hiking adventures!

My dad actually gave this pair to me after using it for about 3 years. He isn’t into hiking as much as we are, but he did use it around his house quite a bit while doing chores in the winter time.

YakTrax 2FIT ANY FOOTWEAR

These YakTrax can pretty much fit to any type of footwear you are using them with. Whether that be hiking boots, tennis shoes, dress shoes, or if you really lazy going to your mailbox..slippers!

Although, not sure if they were really intended for slippers. 😉 As you can see from the photo above, all the metal is located at the bottom of the shoe, so no worries about scraping the sides of your shoes.

This particular set of YakTrax uses a patented coil design and there really are not sharp edges to it. This is great for being able to store them practically anywhere with the peace in mind you won’t really be scratching anything.

Sizing

As far as sizing goes, here is the information I found on YakTrax’s website.

X-SMALL – Women’s 2.5-6 / Men’s 1-4.5
SMALL – Women’s 6.5-10 / Men’s 5-8.5
MEDIUM – Women’s 10.5-12.5 / Men’s 9-11
LARGE – Women’s 13-15 / Men’s 11.5-13.5

I wear somewhere around 11.5 – 12 size of Men’s boots/shoes and this pair seems to fit well on all my shoes universally. Deanna’s seems to fit her feet perfectly as well, so far no complaints in that department.

Weight (for you Ultralight backpackers out there)

These particular pair of YakTrax are specified as 2-4 ounces total. I can barely feel the weight of them by lifting them up in my hands or in my feet. Honestly don’t even notice they are there while hiking which must mean they are keeping me from sliding around as well!

Other Options

Now if you do plan on going on some pretty intense hikes with ice caked all over the trails, you may want to choose want of their more aggressive tread options. They have a “Diamond” model as well as a “Summit” model that look to contain spikes on the bottom of them.

This will probably keep your feet on the ground better in cases where you actually need to make your way up some elevation as well. Deanna and I don’t attempt to hike on very icy terrain, we were given these in case we ever come across any slippery situations on the trail.
