This is the brake controller I use on my 2014 Nissan Frontier. It has really good reviews on Amazon and works great. It is really simple to use once you install it, but make sure you read the manual as there are just a few things you should learn before operating/towing.
For the most part on the Nissan Frontier I leave it in P2, which is the 2nd level of braking power. There is also a manual setting you can tweak to provide more or less braking power via your trailer’s brakes. The LCD screen is really clear and easy to read and I just used some heavy duty 3M velcro like material to mount it on the truck (I really didn’t want to drill holes into my dash).
This brake controller should work on most vehicles, however you will need to buy a separate wiring adapter based on your vehicle’s make and model. This is the wiring setup I needed for my 2014 Nissan Frontier.
