In this video we attempt to show you how we hook our travel trailer up to our mid-sized truck. More specifically we are going to be showing you how we use our Equalizer Weight Distribution system to hook our travel trailer up to our mid-sized truck.
I think researching weight distribution hitches was probably one of the last things we were thinking about when looking for a travel trailer. I knew that we were going to need to get one, but I was all caught up in the research of the actual travel trailer rather than how I was going to connect it to the truck.
Turns out, this item is extremely important in your travel trailer setup. A lot of travel trailer manufacturers don’t tailor their trailers to those that want low tongue weight options. Sure there are plenty of tear drop trailers and trailers less than 20 feet that fall well below your maximum tongue weight on your vehicle. However, a lot of vehicles like our mid-sized truck, have a decent towing capacity (max 6100), but only a mediocre max tongue weight. Many of these trailer manufacturers are literally assuming that you will be purchasing a weight distribution system to go along with your trailer.
You might be asking, so how the heck do we choose the Equalizer hitch over all of the other competitors out there? Well, just so happens the previous owner of the trailer was purchasing a class A and no longer needed his weight distribution hitch. So we inherited it as part of the deal. We figured we must be alright with our Nissan Frontier because his Ford Explorer actually had a smaller max tow rating than our own vehicle.
Little did we know at the time, there was still a lot of research to do. After watching quite a few YouTube videos on how to hook up the Equalizer hitch properly and reading article upon article, I had a general idea of what we needed to do. However, the hardest part about hooking up the hitch isn’t hooking up the hitch. The hardest part about hooking up the hitch is making sure everything is adjusted properly.
Lucky for you and me, the Equalizer brand has an array of helpful videos on Youtube to show you how to accomplish this task. Oh, and there is that manual thing that comes with your hitch as well. 🙂 We haven’t take out the trailer enough for me to say we have it set up 100% correctly yet but I do feel like we are getting closer. The first time we took it out (Cozy Hills Camp Ground) I put way too much of the weight on the weight distribution bars and the front axle of the truck. I think we got it figured out this time, so hopefully the drive will be a little less uncomfortable.
The truck pulls the trailer with no issues whatsoever with the Equalizer Weight distribution system if you get the thing set up correctly and that is the key. I’ll update this post once we get the trailer out again to see if our weight distribution hitch is set up to our liking.
