Hiking Yankee Springs Recreation Area
Howdy folks!
I held off writing this blog post until our second video hiking Yankee Springs Recreation Area was published, so I apologize for the delay. 🙂
We had fun at both of our hikes at Yankee Springs Recreation Area, but as you may know, the first was a bit of a misadventure due to some trails being overgrown with vegetation.

The first trail we started off at was Deep Lake Trail. This trail is located in the northeastern part of the park near, you guessed it, Deep Lake. One thing you might have noticed during our first video, is that we never did quite make the lake whilst on the trail. More on that later…
Both bikes and hikers are allowed on many of the trails throughout Yankee Springs Recreation Area. We tried our best to stay on the hiking trails. Turns out, unless you have a machete, that isn’t always possible.
Bam. Yup that is right. This might be a great trail for tree huggers, but not so much for us folks avoiding ticks. I’m sure this is a beautiful trail when it is trimmed back, just wasn’t easily passable at the time.
We ended up turning Deep Lake Trail from a 4 mile loop into a 6 mile down and back, but we did still enjoy the hike. Driving to the lake was still definitely needed afterwards of course.
Sassafras Trail
Hooray a trail that we can hike down with no issues! Redemption was made at Yankee Springs Recreation Area on Day 2.
Look how nice and wide that trail is complete with educational signs. As you could tell in the video, we were in a much better mood on this hike.
Sorry for the lack of photos, Deanna left her camera behind on this trail so it was just myself (Shane) snapping a few shots here and there. Look how awesome all these ferns look along the trail though, so beautiful.
After checking out Sassafras trail we took one last drive over to Gunn Lake. I’m not sure how big the lake is, but it can certainly fit quite a few boats on it. We even saw some sail boats out there. 🙂
Despite the misadventure at Deep Lake Trail, we still really enjoyed hiking around Yankee Springs Recreation Area in Michigan. Definitely would recommend this to anyone that enjoys some nature trails and kayaking/boating on lakes!
