Hiking Up Mount Scott – Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge
Hiking up Mount Scott gave me the ability to say something I never thought I’d be able to say. I have hiked up a mountain in the state of Oklahoma and I very much enjoyed it.
HIKING UP MOUNT SCOTT
So the first thing you have to know about hiking up Mount Scott is that it isn’t your typical rocky or dirt path trail. The road leading up to Mt. Scott is currently closed (as of May 2019) to road traffic, so you can only go up this mountain via bike or on foot.
The second thing you need to know is that although many claim this as being an easy hike, it is still 1026ft of elevation gain. People that aren’t particularly in shape won’t claim this is an easy hike. Does it gain elevation much more gradually than lets say scrambling up the rocky face instead? Yes. However, Deanna and I hike at least once or twice a week and I was still sucking in air on the way up this mountain. Food for thought before you conquer this yourself.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING OKLAHOMA LANDSCAPE
One of the best parts about this trail/road is the fact that most of the vegetation along it…doesn’t really exist! So basically the entire way up during this hike you can enjoy amazing views and judge how slow your progress truly is as well.
We were lucky enough to have a vulture looking over us as we hiked up, just in case we fell over dead from exhaustion. Better luck next time Mr. Vulture.
One bit of advice, wear something to protect you from all the sun. There is very little shade or places to truly sit down and rest going up the side of this mountain. If you want to chill and take a break, maybe bring a cushion or something because there aren’t any benches along this road.
SO, YOU MADE IT TO THE TOP EH?
So you hiked half of the 5.6 miles all the way up over 1000 ft and you are wondering if it was worth it? Well, that is why people make blog posts and adventure vlogs to give you the sneak peak silly. Take a look at the photos above and judge for yourself, is this hike worth it?
Deanna and I would definitely have to say an absolute yes! Just be aware, once you reach the top there aren’t any…designated restrooms after that long hike. Deanna found out the hard way and now knows to take in water gradually rather than all at once. 🙂
