Hiking Turkey Run State Park In Indiana
Turkey Run State Park is freaking awesome. This was really our first hike since truly being full-time RVers! It took an awful lot of planning and logistics in order to make this happen, but after 3 years of questioning and answering…we have done it.
Growing up in Indiana, Turkey Run State Park was one of my go-to hiking destinations. I was really excited to share the experience with Deanna and see how she liked it.

MMM SUGAR CREEK
When you first start your drive to Turkey Run State Park, odds are you are going to be driving through a bunch of corn fields and soy bean fields. However, you’ll quickly find out Turkey Run State Park’s landscape is quite a bit different than your every day Indiana field. 🙂
The entrance to Turkey Run State Park is quite epic and awesome with its long suspension bridge going over sugar creek from a slightly wooded area to a great forest with winding trails and amazing rock formations. Don’t be fooled by sugar creek’s name though, it is not as sugary as it may portray, but it is sweet if you want to go for a canoe, kayak, or tubing trip!
SWEET SUSPENSION BRIDGE!
We decided to hang a right after the suspension bridge heading towards trails 4 and 8. We did a little mixture of the two while gradually making our way west and then north. First we hit up the awesome covered bridge and then took a quick pit stop at Lusk Home.
Once we got to the furthest north point intersection between trails 4 and 8, Deanna and I decided to part ways…well at least until we met up later on. I wanted to hit up some of the more difficult trails that weren’t exactly dog friendly.
EXPLORING THE UNIQUE LANDSCAPES
The first true landmark after Deanna and I split up (sounds so dramatic I know) was the Devil’s punch bowl. It looks as though my phone took in the low light much better than my GoPro fortunately. No, you won’t find crystal clear water running through these creeks as much is dirty water due to run off from nearby fields etc.
However, it is still a blast hiking through the creeks themselves even if they are a tad bit slippery. Definitely recommend waterproof shoes or some sturdy sandals (not flip flops).
PROPER FOOTWEAR IS IMPORTANT!
Yea, I don’t always listen to my own advice. I guess it had been a while since I been to Turkey Run State Park last because I didn’t wear either waterproof boots nor Sandals and thus it did result in some wet feet. I still had a ton of fun maneuvering the best I could around situations like the photo (above).
NEARBY PARK
Definitely make sure you hit up Shades State Park as well as it is only a 40 min drive away. More awesome landscapes and fun places to hike.
TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE
I grew up only a couple hours away from this Turkey Run State Park and yet it still amazes me every time I visit. It doesn’t have majestic views over an ocean, vast woodland, or mountain top..but when you hike these trails you are really submerged within them giving you a unique hiking experience.
Unfortunately in this video and blog post I BARELY scratched the top of some of these fun hikes throughout the state park. The more challenging, and in my opinion fun trails aren’t exactly dog friendly so be careful bringing the pups along with you.
If you do head to Turkey Run State Park and want a fun challenging trail I would recommend trails 3, 5, and 9. None of which are in this video, but you can go up and down ladders and really explore these awesome landscapes in ways you should be able to.
