Hiking Mountain Lakes Park in New York

On this adventure through Mountain Lakes Park we will be taking you towards the New York/Connecticut border! This area is just barely within the realm of the Hudson Valley. I think you will really enjoy this adventure and we recommend you go check out this place for yourselves!

LOOK AT ALL THOSE LEAVES

When we first got to this park we knew there would be a lookout point, but didn’t really know what to expect (kind of the theme behind most of our hikes right?).  Although the trails were icy, it was unseasonably warm on this particular hike and we jumped at the opportunity to get outside.

VISTAS!

The first overlook/viewpoint we got to was quite epic even on an overcast day (image slider above). I just imagine this area in lush green vegetation or with fall colors with panoramic views. Hopefully we get another chance to visit this park in another season as it was an awesome experience even in winter!

LITTLE FOGGY BUT STILL BEAUTIFUL

It’ll be quite obvious that it is a lookout point as they do have one of those coin operated viewing…machine deals at the top of it. Can’t miss it. 🙂 Towering over the lakes below, this overlook is such an amazing experience out there with just you and nature.

Part II of our adventure through Mountain Lakes Park:

The second part of our adventure took us a bit further north in the park towards a couple lakes (Hemlock Lake and Spruce Lake). There are some pretty neat older rustic camping areas around Hemlock Lake.

I believe there is, or at least used to be, summer camps that take/took place there. If they do still take place there, I do kind of hope they replace some of those roofs soon as the word rustic might be a bit too kind haha.

HEMLOCK LAKE

The photos above are of Hemlock Lake and some creeks running to and away from it. There were so many unexpected water features at this park that just really made our trip. If you take the time to hop off the trail just a little bit, there are some really awesome waterfalls you can go check out.

SPRUCE LAKE & RUINS

If you are heading to Spruce Lake on the red trail you will come across these very interesting ruins. Deanna speaks about this in the 2nd part of our video series hiking through this area.

There are quite a few theories on who and when these shelters were created, but the most interesting is one involving extraterrestrials. (Also helps for a good laugh 🙂 ).

WEE BIT SLIPPERY

If you can get past all the icy paths in the winter time, you eventually make it to EVEN MORE awesome waterfalls off of the red trail. We didn’t spend a lot of time in this area of the park because it did start to rain. So we picked up the pace a little to finish our hike around Spruce Lake.

EERIE FEEL TO AN EMPTY LAKE

Hiking around Spruce Lake was sort of an eerie experience due to the fact that it was practically dried up. It was however really cool seeing a creek flowing through the center of it. It looks like it had recently been drained since the ground surrounding it was still very saturated with water.

Maybe it is drained to lessen the strain on the dam nearby? I’m not sure, but if you happen to know, feel free to leave that information in the comments below! We would love to hear more about it!
