Hiking Ives Trail Segment Two in Connecticut

If you follow our YouTube channel you probably saw us hike the first segment of Ives Trail. In case you wanted to check that out real quick, Ives Trail Segment One. It took us a while to find this trail initially.

We actually hiked around Tarrywile Park in Danbury, CT and just happened to notice the red/yellow marker on some of the trees and wondered what it was. Turns out, there is a 20 mile hiking trail going through a portion of Connecticut.

The only disadvantage of this trail is that you either have to do the trail in segments or hike about 40 miles. As you can tell by the title of this post/video, we decided to break it up into different segments.

Ives Trail MapMAP OF IVES TRAIL ABOVE

In the map above you can see we started where we left off in segment one, which is a small parking lot diagonal from the Wooster Mountain gun range. This is a fairly small parking and there was only one other vehicle there when we showed up (picture show below).

Ives Trail Segment 2web1NOT A HEAVILY TRAFFICKED TRAIL

So I guess it is probably good that this isn’t a heavily trafficked trail due to the fact there isn’t a lot of parking. Although I am quite surprised there aren’t more people hiking along this trail because it is quite beautiful.

As we did with the first segment of the trail, we left one vehicle in our starting location and our other vehicle at the end of the trail. This way we didn’t have to hike twice the amount. 🙂

Ives Trail Segment 2web3GOOD EXERCISE FOR SURE

The beginning of this segment is pretty much going up the entire way. Again, this isn’t super challenging terrain, but still a decent workout. As we hiked around Moses Mountain there weren’t a lot of scenic views, but there were some neat wooded valleys to look into.

As we got closer and closer to Tarrywile Park we did notice the terrain started to level out a bit more. So really it seems like most of the uphill battle during this segment was making your way around Moses Mountain. There are a few more short climbs here and there, but we were pretty much done with the struggle at this point.

Ives Trail Segment 2web5INTERESTING TRAIL LANDMARKS

There obviously used to be a road going through this area for these cars to end up along the trail. However, after hiking through the area ourselves we weren’t sure what these people were thinking driving on these roads.

I’m pretty sure my Nissan Frontier could handle the climbs and the rocky roads, but these cars were obviously no match. It would definitely be interesting to hear the history behind the two cars we saw while hiking. 🙂

Ives Trail Segment 2web6END POINT OF SEGMENT TWO – TARRYWILE PARK

I never made a post on our website about Tarrywile Park, but you can check out the original video here. Just be warned, I knew a lot less about videoing at that point in time and the footage was quite shaky. This view at Mootry Peak Lookout is probably my favorite part about Tarrywile Park.

There are quite a few neat ponds and other features throughout the park, but I am a sucker for vistas. It is hard to tell via the picture but you could definitely see for miles from this view point.

Ives Trail Segment 2web9PARKS POND

We wrap up the video near Park’s Pond in Tarrywile park before heading over to the truck. We technically still had energy to do a bit more hiking along this trail, but we will save that for another day when we do the next segment. We may end up doing it soon, or we may just wait until Fall so we can split this trail up into 3 seasons. 😉
