Hiking Babcock Preserve In Connecticut
Babcock Preserve in Connecticut was one pretty and cool nature preserve. It isn’t a state park and I don’t think it is really even classified as a town park, it is simply a preserve.
Thank you for taking the time to come check out our video and blog post. It is people like you that help keep us motivated to document our adventures so others can get a little sneak preview of their own adventure.
NATURE TRAILS
This nature preserve offers quite a few trails, although I must admit they weren’t marked as well as I had hoped. Definitely print off a map before you get to the preserve and keep an eye out for trail markers.
Our goal this trip was to pretty much take a loop around the entire park but unfortunately that didn’t work out as we had planned. We MOSTLY got around the entire park with exception of the far west side.
ILLUSTRATED STORIES
As far as we could tell, there isn’t one specific part of this preserve that sets it apart from others in the surrounding area. It did have a cool trail though where I’m guessing the area teamed up with a local school and they have a story you can read along the path.
Every so often there is an illustrated page of the story you can read as you enjoy nature at the same time. I thought that was a great idea to inspire young children to get out into nature a bit more.
SUBURBIA’S NATURE PARK
The best part about this preserve is in the name itself. It is preserving an area of nature stuck between a very populated area of suburbs. I wouldn’t quite compare it to NYC’s central park, but in a way it acts similarly.
It gives those stressed out with life a way to get out and into a wooded area away from it all. Although we do favor places with overlooks and different water features, the main reason we get out ourselves is just to feel that freedom that nature provides.
BLAZE THE HIKING DOG
Blaze certainly had a blast hurdling the many small obstacles in our path (park is dog friendly if you hadn’t guessed already 🙂 ). The trails themselves are fairly easy with maybe a few moderate patches here and there due to downed trees etc.
We originally went to this park thinking it would be fairly small, but were surprised that it took us a couple hours to explore from one side to the other and back.
THE BAD NEWS
There is one more thing I must say otherwise I’d feel guilty sending anyone in this park’s direction. Although I’m sure this is not a crime intensive area, on this particular day we noticed someone’s car had been broken into at the main parking lot.
The owner of the vehicle was calling the cops by the time we reached the parking lot so not sure exactly when it happened. If you do stop by this preserve, just be aware to keep any valuables out of sight or don’t even leave them in the car.
Again, I highly doubt this is a common occurrence at this particular preserve, but be careful wherever it is you adventure and always be aware of your surroundings.
