Exploring the Walkway over the Hudson in New York
Exploring the Walkway over the Hudson isn’t one of our typical hiking adventures, we hope you can still appreciate all the fantastic views along this walkway. This was the first time I had actually walked all the way across the bridge and turns out it is quite a long bridge. 🙂
It is also a ways up though, so if you are a bit scared of heights I wouldn’t walk next to the edge of the bridge.
STARTING ON THE EAST SIDE
We ended up parking on the east side of the bridge…just south of the official parking lot (Google Map below showing where we parked). Apparently we missed the turn into the actual parking lot and parked on some other property.
There were a bunch of other people already there, so not sure if it is overflow parking lot or we just got lucky. So I would highly suggest parking in the official lot to take the risk out of that situation haha.
NOT MUCH TO SEE AT FIRST
There really isn’t much to see towards the beginning of this parking lot, but they do have a few informational posters and maps around to learn more about the surrounding area. With that being said, all throughout the trail there are posters on the sides of the bridge you can scan with your phone.
We didn’t do this ourselves so I can’t tell you how helpful they are, but apparently there is an app or something you can download to listen to historical informational bits. We may just have to try that the next time we head over there.
AFRAID OF HEIGHTS? DON’T LOOK DOWN!
If you aren’t afraid of heights, it is fun to kind of glance over the edge and see how you progressively get higher as you walk along. If you watched the video at the top of this post (the main reason these blog posts exist) you’ll notice that it is also a dog friendly trail.
Be sure to bring your own poo bags though to clean up after your pet. Blaze only goes in grass so he was quite relieved after we got done hiking 2 1/2 miles to find a patch of grass haha.
BEAUTIFUL VIEWS
Off to the north side of the bridge is fairly clear with beautiful views of the surrounding city as well as mountainous terrain on the northwest side. We were visiting the bridge on Thanksgiving Day 2017 so there were a few leaves on the trees, but they had mostly fallen. I imagine this area of the Hudson River is beautiful during the fall time with the array of fall foliage colors.
SUMMARY
As Deanna mentioned in the short video, we definitely love the view south of the Walkway. Here you can see Mt. Beacon in the far distance along with some other parts of the Hudson Highlands.
The Walkway over the Hudson has such majestic views in all directions so it is hard to pick a favorite, but something about that suspension bridge puts a nice ‘bridge’ between nature and the city. We really couldn’t have picked a more beautiful day to hike along this walkway though.
Bright sunny day with absolutely NO wind on the top of the bridge. Hope you all get that lucky if you head there yourself some day!
