Exploring Kartchner Caverns State Park
Kartchner Caverns State Park was definitely the coolest cave area I’ve been to without actually going into the caves! I know, probably should have made time to do that as well, BUT, it was still an awesome adventure hiking on the surrounding hills!
Why only hit up the hiking trail and not the caverns? Well, we had the dog with us and so far we haven’t found any spelunking dog friendly caves. Not to mention this was a pretty nice day in the winter to take Blaze along with and stretch those greyhound legs!
Did I mention how absolutely beautiful this area of the country is? Sure, it gets super hot during the summer time, but Benson, AZ has been a retreat for locals to head to in order to get some relief from those warmer temps. Higher elevations are wonderful when in the desert climate!
I didn’t really take these photos in any particular order to tell a story, more so just to capture the beauty of the surrounding area. I was simply mesmerized by all the different types of vegetation and how even the mountains seemed to look unique in the desert landscape. (Leave me alone, I’m from Indiana originally).
It did turn out to be quite the workout hiking from the visitor center around the outside of Kartchner Caverns State Park. There is a bit of elevation gain here and there, but we did opt to take the slightly easier route since Blaze was coming along with us. We could see for miles once getting up on some of the hillsides!
