Attempting to Kayak in Constitution Marsh near Cold Spring, NY

Well, as you could guess by the title of the post, we didn’t actually get to kayak in Constitution Marsh as we had hoped. We technically could have made it back in there and explored, but we wouldn’t have been able to get out underneath the bridge for another 5 hours.

Considering we only had a water bottle each, we decided maybe it was something we could do another day if we were a bit more prepared.

TIDAL CHART

Above is the tidal chart for the weekend we went kayaking. I’m not 100% sure how accurate these things are, but I think the idea for this particular area is to head into the Marsh near low tide and time it right so you get out before high tide.

You don’t want to be kayaking in the marsh while the tide is going down because you don’t want to be stuck out in the marsh. This isn’t an area you can just hop out of the kayak and push…you will indeed get stuck in the mush that is the marsh.

Constitution Marsh 2014 1KAYAKING THE MARSH

Above is an example of us kayaking through the marsh in 2014 when we must have hit low tide. We actually couldn’t get back too far in the marsh without bottoming out our kayaks. I think in this particular case we were just fairly lucky on timing because I certainly don’t remember even checking the tide charts that time. 🙂

Kayaking around Constitution IslandEPIC VIEWS

After deciding Constitution Marsh wasn’t going to work for us, we decided to take our chances kayaking around Constitution Island instead and we were glad we did. It is really hard to beat the epic views between Storm King Mountain and Breakneck Ridge (photo above) while kayaking along the Hudson River near Cold Spring, NY.

FOUNDRY COVE

You can put your kayak in just north of Foundry Cove near the Cold Spring train station (picture above). The parking is free on weekends and there was plenty of spare parking when we got there.

There looked to be a place you could rent out kayaks in Cold Spring as well if you don’t own your own gear. No idea on the pricing,  but this area is definitely beautiful if you get the chance to visit.

Constitution Island KayakingBE CAREFUL.

There are quite a few bigger boats traveling through the Hudson River as you could imagine, so definitely wear a life vest and be careful out there. If you are not familiar with paddling on the Hudson, it is more like a lake than a river. There isn’t much of a current throwing you around, but the wake from boats and the wind can create some mighty big waves.

One attempt we made a couple years ago on the Hudson River was a complete failure. We were attempting to kayak towards Fishkill Creek near Beacon, NY that day.  At the time we lived further inland, still in New York, but the weather was all nice and dandy where we were. We packed up the kayaks and headed north towards Beacon.

Once we made it to the dock and put our kayaks in, it still wasn’t too bad near “Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Park.” However, once we made it out on the water and tried to head south, it was like paddling on a treadmill. We paddled as hard as we could but practically stayed in the same place as we were fighting the waves.

With that short story being said, definitely check the weather and tidal charts before you head to this area of the Hudson River. Just because it may seem clear and sunny where you currently are, it may not be true for where you are heading.
