7 Places to Visit Near Munising, Michigan!
Howdy folks!
We came across 7 places to visit near Munising, Michigan that we think you may want to check out while exploring the area! Yes, the video says five, but we have a couple extras for you in this blog post!
#1) Bay Furnace Ruins
Bay Furnace Ruins is the most “historical” of locations that we hit up in this top 7 list. When driving back to this area you may have think you made the wrong turn because it kind of seems like you are heading back to a campground. Because you ARE heading back towards a campground. No worries though, there are no charges or fees to get into this attraction. In fact, all the places (except one) are absolutely free minus transportation costs to get there.
When we first got to Bay Furnace Ruins it kind of took us back to our first DnSAdventures stomping grounds. One of our first videos we put together was at Mine Hill Preserve in Connecticut. Both areas offer great historic information to go along with the views, but Bay Furnace Ruins…well it offers a beautiful beach as well!
#2) Grand Island Harbor Rear Range Lighthouse
Besides the fact that we just about drove past this landmark (it isn’t exactly well marked) this was quite the interesting find. There is not one spec of info to read near the lighthouse, but you can just sit there looking up enjoying its mostly maintained beauty. However, if you do want some more information, here are a couple extra websites that seem to have a bit more knowledge than us:
One thing I must warn you about is the fact that once you go into the narrow driveway towards the lighthouse, there is not turning around. We are fairly used to backing up the trailer so it was no big deal with our F250, but if you aren’t a fan of backing up…you may want to park near the road and just walk down the driveway.
#3 Wagner Falls Scenic Site
Wagner Falls Scenic Site is basically a miniature state park with one awesome trail heading back to the falls. I believe it was only about half a mile total, so not any back breaking experience to get to the falls. We are very happy we took the time to swing by this beautiful area as the falls were quite beautiful. Oh, did I mention all (but one) of these adventures involved Blaze coming along with us? Yup, dog friendly is a must have for us!
The next location we took off to was just up the road from Wagner Falls Scenic Site. We literally didn’t know it even existed until we drove past it and saw cars parked along the road. 🙂
#4) Alger Falls
Although Alger Falls may not seem AS spectacular as Wagner Falls Scenic Site, it does appear that these falls are a bit higher up. At the time of our visit there wasn’t a ton of water flowing, but I imagine after a good rain storm these falls would be flowing at an awesome rate.
Depending on your route, you may end up driving right past Alger Falls on your way up to Munising. So keep on the lookout for pullover spots along the roads as you may just come across this gorgeous area!
#5) Grand Island Harbor Scenic Overlook
Grand Island Harbor Scenic Overlook is kind of a no-brainer in my opinion if you are looking for things to see in the area. I mean, these folks went out of there way to build a road up to the top of a hill so you can see spectacular views…FOR FREE. Why wouldn’t you want to go see that?
If you look off into the distance you can see the absolutely amazing Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Wait, why isn’t this on the list? Oh you just keep reading my friend, just keep reading. We pretty much had this overlook to ourselves for a while too. Michigan folks must have an overdose of beauty not to hang out up here like all the time.
#6) Blaze Beach
Ok ok, well maybe this isn’t really called Blaze Beach. Since I didn’t see a name on Google Maps though, means we get to name it right? Anyways, here are the GPS coordinates (also posted in the video): 46.438378, -86.687244
We were driving past this beach all week and finally decided to swing on in and see how far we could drive the truck before getting it stuck. Just kidding, but seriously be careful because it is a sandy area and you really could get stuck if you drove too far back.
You can get some awesome views of islands in the distance and we saw a bunch of people through the week just setting up chairs and chillaxing along the beach. Look closely along the shores and you can see beautiful colored rocks just like along the National Lakeshore a bit further northwest from the beach.
#7) Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
Although we already did make a video/blog post related to –> Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore <– I just had to include it in this list because…well it is why we came to this part of Michigan to begin with. This was not free and was not dog friendly, but it was worth every dime and Blaze could deal with being left alone for a few hours. 🙂
